WhatsApp Plus users suspended by official app for 24 hours

0

WhatsApp is imposing 24-hour lock-outs on people trying to access its service via an unauthorised Android app.

The Facebook-owned messaging service said that it had acted against users of WhatsApp Plus because of concerns that the program might cause private data to be leaked to third-parties.

The unofficial app offers extra ways to customise how conversations appear.

Experts say Android users should be cautious about where they download apps from.

WhatsApp recently reported it had 700 million users sending an average of 30 billion messages a day. It currently charges a $0.99 (65p) annual fee to users who sign up to the service after their first 12 months of using it.

“Our goal is always to keep WhatsApp fast and secure for the people who use it – it’s the most important thing we do,” said a spokesman for the firm.

“Third-parties that have built unauthorised functionality on top of WhatsApp create issues for people including lost messages.

“This goes against the experience we work hard to give people and we won’t let it continue. Starting today, we are taking aggressive action against unauthorised apps and alerting the people who use them.”

The effort coincides with the introduction of the ability to access WhatsApp from the Google Chrome web browser, as an alternative to the app. This will not, however, work on Apple’s iPhones or iPads.

Cease and desist letter

According to one app store, WhatsApp Plus had itself been downloaded more than 35 million times since its 2012 releases by a Spanish developer, who called himself Rafalense.

Security consultant Graham Cluley said that figure sounded “surprisingly high”, but acknowledged there was no independent way to verify it.

WhatsApp Plus’ own website appears to be offline at this time.

But the moderator of a development community, which had supported it, used Google Plus to indicate that work on the software would now be put on hold.

“We have received a cease and desist letter from WhatsApp and we are obligated to remove all download links and unfortunately delete this community,” he wrote.

“[I] am really sorry for this but it’s out of our hands and WhatsApp has pushed us into a corner that we can’t escape this time. It was a fun ride but it has come to an end.

“Deepest regards from Rafalense and me and all the WhatsApp Plus team for your support.”

Twenty-four hour bansWhatsApp Plus offers a way to use colours and background images in chat conversations that are unavailable in the official app.

In addition, it allows users to increase the size limit on attached video and sound files and also lets them prevent others being able to see when they last logged into the service – a feature it used to charge a “donation” to unlock.

To access the features, smartphone owners must first uninstall the official WhatsApp app if it is already on their handsets.

WhatsAppFacebook is urging users to download the official WhatsApp app from Google Play

Facebook is in turn urging people using WhatsApp Plus to delete it and install the official app via Google’s Play store. However, even if they do so, they are told they cannot access the service for further 24 hours because they violated its terms and conditions.

‘Maintaining control’WhatsApp Plus was not available from Google Play – the Android developer’s own store – but was promoted on several smaller alternatives.

“People should be careful about third-party stores,” commented Dr Joss Wright from the Oxford Internet Institute.

“There are levels of quality control that are implemented by Google, which withdraws apps that are detected as being not completely legitimate, and indeed by Apple, which is incredibly restrictive about what it allows on the iOS store.

“Such apps could bring with them security bugs.”

But he added that Facebook also had other incentives to stop independent apps latching onto its WhatsApp platform.

“That could potentially prevent it from adding services later for an added cost,” he said.

“Or if it wants to add adverts later and ensure they are being served to the people who should be seeing them, then that it needs to maintain control and prevent the rules that it has set from being bypassed by third-party clients.”

Hundreds of Ghanaians in Berlin last Tuesday protested against President John Mahama who is in the country to hold bilateral talks with German Chancellor, Angela Merkel.

Some of the protestors were seen with placards with various inscriptions such as, “Stop cocaine trade in Ghana”, “No German Loan for NDC”, “Dumsor Dumsor, We Need Light, Dumsor Dumsor We Don’t Have Light”, “Mahama Is a thief”, “NDC Cocaine Party…” among other things.

However, in a statement, the Flagstaff House said only a handful of opposition members picketed around the Intercontinental Hotel in Berlin where the President was on Tuesday.

“In a sharp contrast to the handful (exact count, 18 people) of opposition NPP supporters who were outside the Intercontinental Hotel in Berlin holding placards insulting the President of the Republic of Ghana, hundreds of patriotic, concerned and hardworking Ghanaians living in Germany on Tuesday evening met with President John Dramani Mahama as part of his State Visit to the Federal Republic of Germany.”

“The over three hundred Ghanaians who attended the Ghanaian Community Meeting to interact with the President included Ghanaian professional, traditional leaders, students, business executives, children of Ghanaians living in Germany some of who are now Germans of Ghanaian Origin and a number of friends of Ghana,” the statement noted.

The state has formally charged celebrity broadcaster, Kwasi Kyei Darkwah (KKD) with rape even though the alleged 19-year-old victim has indicated she was no longer interested in pursuing the case.

The state is however yet to serve KKD with a summary of the evidence gathered.

This came to light when the case was called at the Magistrate Court in Accra Thursday morning. The case was subsequently adjourned to Thursday January 29, 2015 to enable the prosecutors serve KKD with a summary of the evidence and the bill of indictment for his lawyers to study it.

Graphic Online’s correspondent in court, Nana Konadu Agyeman reported that the prosecution asked for the case to be adjourned for one week when it was called Thursday morning.

After KKD is served, the case would move from the Magistrate Court to a higher court.

KKD was present in court.

The Human Rights Division of the Accra High Court last week granted bail to KKD on humanitarian grounds after 19 days on remand.

She communicated her decision to the police and made copies of the letter available to the DPP, the Registrar of the court and the Chief Justice.

The two page letter, signed by the victim and issued on January 12, 2015 called on the authorities to stop the case, as she would not co-operate in the trial.

AFCON 2015 Group B: Cape Verde 0 – 0 DR Congo

Muteba Kidiaba made a fine late save to keep the scores level but neither side were able to carve out many meaningful chances

Group B at the Africa Cup of Nations remains wide open after Cape Verde and DR Congo drew 0-0 on Thursday.

Both sides drew their opening Africa Cup of Nations matches, meaning a win for either would propel them to within touching distance of a quarter-final spot.

But Rui Aguas’ team failed to make the most of their first-half opportunities while DR Congo improved after the break, but could not find a goal.

It was the third draw in four Group B matches, following Tunisia’s dramatic defeat of Zambia earlier in the day, and leaves the pool finely poised ahead of Monday’s final round of matches.

Florent Ibenge’s men were highly fancied heading into the competition, but must hope for an improved display against Tunisia if they are to advance.

Julio Tavares came off the bench in Cape Verde’s draw against Tunisia but did enough during that performance to earn a starting berth.

It was easy to see why as he was full of imagination and found Kuca in the box following some slick passing after five minutes, only for the winger to fire high and wide.

That was a sign of things to come. Cape Verde’s bright start continued as Kuca won a free kick in a dangerous position. Babanco sent the resulting effort narrowly wide, with Muteba Kidiaba scrambling desperately across his line.

Just as that early momentum appeared to have been snuffed out, Cape Verde created their best chance of the half in the 31st minute.

It came from another Babanco set-piece, as this time the skipper curled in a wonderful cross from the left that evaded everyone except Calu at the back post, but he could only direct his header straight at Kidiaba.

That brought Aguas’ side back to life and five minutes later Kuca raced through as his maker switched off, only to be denied by a well-timed block.

But the longer Cape Verde went without scoring, the more their opponents grew in confidence. Yannick Bolasie showed a glimmer of what he is capable of in the final minute of the half, driving at the defence before firing in a powerful low shot, as DR Congo finished the half on the front foot.

Ibenge’s side emerged a refreshed force after the break, Cedrick Mabwati underlining that fact in the 53rd minute as he danced inside from the left and ruffled the side netting with a powerful shot.

That start to the second half promised much but, as both sides tired, the pace dropped and neither side appeared willing to risk losing the match in order to win it.

However, Cape Verde almost snatched all three points five minutes from time as they committed men forward for a corner, with Kidiaba palming Fernando Vaerla’s header away before rising quickly to smother Gege’s follow-up.

He was called into action once more two minutes later to deny Heldon, but, despite that late flourish, the points were shared.

The President also spoke about the new rates for membership and the new categories of membership introduced by the Union and called for musicians to avail themselves of the numerous new benefits introduced with the new rates.

The deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts called for industry wide unity so that the benefits of such funds like AMWeF can be enjoyed by more people. She acknowledged the tremendous improvements the Union has been making and urged the Union leadership to spread its arms to unite the music industry.

Promotion of tourism, culture and creative arts is a shared responsibility – Minister

The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon Mrs. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare has tasked Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives to collaborate with her Ministry to promote domestic tourism vigorously to the benefit of all Ghanaians.

She noted that with the District Assemblies as the custodians of tourist sites, they are the primary beneficiaries of any dividends that accrue from such efforts.

At a meeting with Municipal and District Chief Executives from the Brong Ahafo region, the Minister observed that promotion of tourism, culture and creative arts is a shared responsibility that requires the concerted efforts of all stakeholders – policy makers, private sector, traditional authorities among others.

She appealed to MMDCEs to use every opportunity at their disposal to entreat hospitality sector operators to collect the 1% Tourism Levy and remit same at the specified periods to the designated banks – GCB Bank, Unibank and Universal Merchant Bank.

The 1% levy is a tax payable not by operators but patrons of any tourism facility on services rendered.

She said it is by so doing that the sector will generate the needed resources to improve product and infrastructural development, marketing and promotion, market research, human resource improvement, etc.

She cautioned hospitality service providers that the de-dollarisation policy was still in force and that the only legal tender in the country was the Ghana Cedi. She tasked the MMDCEs to ensure strict compliance with the policy and prevent quoting of rates in foreign currencies.

Some of the MMDCEs called for technical and financial support from the Ministry for the development of some attraction sites. They also drew attention to promotion of potential tourism initiatives such as funeral tourism.

The meeting formed part of the Minister’s nationwide familiarization tour. The team, involving Ministry officials and the private sector, are currently in the Ashanti region.

The Fear and panic of GHAMRO Audit Report

$
0
0
Just after it was announced that the audit report for GHAMRO  was ready, the disease of fear and panic gripped the old beneficiaries but before we go to the report lets digress a little.

The theory of if it’s not me then it must be destroyed is one fundamental disease of the black mind. I have observed with keen interest the manner in which some music right owners want to destroy Ghamro just because the court asked for the right thing to be done. The RMs were given a 6months mandate to hold an elections and all these peeved group had to do was to place an injunction on it and turn around to say yes you could not hold the elections so vacate the post just like taking of the feathers of a bird and asking an elderly person which bird it was.

Names like Gyedu Blay, Akosua Agyepong, Sloopy Mike Gyemfi, Pozo Hayes are no meager names in the industry so when I heard that they had follow Ekow Micah to the Ghamro offices to violently lock it up I was shocked but you just can’t tell what influences or motivates people to misbehave in a certain way. Their reason for going to lock up the place was that the RMs did not inform them of the extension and even that reason was not true since they were in court and were told of the extension also a press briefing was held and that information was provided to the press.

One major problem that took Ghamro to court was ACCOUNTABILITY and God being so good an audit report for 2012, 2013 and 2014 management report have been completed by the company’s auditors the old board employed. The main focus should now be on the old board answering for their stewardship and refunding monies which have been squandered if any instead of them trying hard to throw dust into the eyes of the public by spieling wild and baseless allegations against the RMs and causing unrest in the industry.

After reading through the audit report you realize that there are lots of questions to be answered for instance how could they pay an amount of ghc51,000 for ID cards which was not done besides not even one member of the old board has a sample indeed when the motionpix company was questioned they confirmed that they had no contract yet they were paid in full without doing any work. An amount of ghc55,000 was also used in purchasing a Toyota sequoia which was taken home as maybe ex-gratia by the ex chairman. An amount of 4.3 billion old cedis was transferred into unknown accounts in December 2013 within a week. Cheque books were in individual pockets and monies were been withdrawn without the knowledge of the accountant. To add insult to injury an amount of ghc11,000 intended for a great man like CK Mann turned into ghc1,100 and the rest of it unaccounted for, an upfront disrespect to the right owner. Now instead of appearing to answer to the queries like how Mark Okraku Mantey and Rex Omar appeared before the auditors, Carlos Sakyi, Amandzeba and KK Kabobo are rather hiding and sending people to cause unnecessary confusion.

Some of us who are observing quietly will not be disrupted by such confused and ugly noises in fact our eyes will be on the ball to see what answers the old board will provide for their stewardship and not the useless and baseless allegations been thrown at the RMs just for doing their Job.

Last but not the least my advise goes out to the many silent right owners not to sit down quietly whiles the few who benefited from the rot try to destroy it, they should not be swayed by the ugly noises but rather read in between the lines in order to save the backbone of the industry because that is their pension and it must be protected.

In concluding I would like to encourage the RMs to remain resolute as they conclude their work by holding elections for appointment of substantial directors . The whole industry is looking up to them so they shouldn’t let them down.

As I wait patiently to witness the historic elections on the 11th of February 2015 in another breath I wait impatiently for the full length of the frog to manifest now that it’s dead

Goodluck to GHAMRO.
