If you’re anything like us, this past year has been a whirlwind of work deadlines, social engagements and task juggling. We’ve barely had time to go to the gym, let alone the cinema to catch the latest releases. That’s the beauty of DStv’s BoxOffice feature – you can enjoy all the Hollywood movies and local content you didn’t get a chance to watch from the comfort of your couch.

Plus, it’s a whole lot cheaper than a family trip to the cinema, and there are two ultra-convenient ways to access BoxOffice to rent and watch movies instantly.

BoxOffice on the PVR is available to DStv Premium, DStv Extra and Compact PVR customers residing in South Africa or Lesotho. The catalogue of up to 15 pre-loaded new releases is regularly updated, with some movies made available the same day as they go to DVD.

BoxOffice Online, the online version of the movie rental service is available to anyone with a DStv Connect ID and a BoxOffice Account. You can sign up at www.dstv.com/boxoffice or www.boxoffice.dstv.com. Here, you’ll have instant access to a larger catalogue of movies, including new releases and classics.

All set? Great. Here’s a list of exciting, binge-worthy content to sink your teeth into this festive!

The Lion King

She finds him, gravely injured, in their flooding family home, along with blood-thirsty alligators.

Losing Lerato

There’s a good reason why Kagiso Modupe’s debut film hit the number-one spot at most Ster Kinekor cinemas across Johannesburg – this beautifully-told South African drama follows a young black man who kidnaps his daughter after a nasty custody battle between him and the woman he once loved. Get ready to grab those tissues!

Teen Titans Go! vs. Teen Titans

Available Online until 8 April.

Spider-Man: Far from Home

Another superhero flick to keep those kiddies entertained – this time from Marvel Comics. Tom Holland returns as the beloved Spidey, following the disastrous events of Avengers: Endgame. In a world that has changed forever, Spider-Man must take on new threats as four massive elemental creatures – representing earth, air, water and fire – emerge from the gigantic gap in the universe.

Kings of Mulberry Street

Last, but certainly not least, this South African Indian comedy-drama is another favourite for the whole family to treasure. An appropriately named nine-year-old misfit, Feisty, dreams of being an unbeatable Bollywood hero to defeat the bullying local crime lord threatening his family.

DStv viewers will be in for a thrilling night of professional wrestling action as SuperSport features the 2019 WWE Tables, Ladders & Chairs (TLC) from the Target Center in Minneapolis, United States on Monday 16 December 2019.

The live pre-show begins at 01:30 CAT on SuperSport 4, SuperSport Maximo 2 and the WWE Channel 128, before the Pay-Per-View Special is screened live from 02:00 CAT on the same channels.

For those who love their wrestling but are not night owls, there will be a repeat later the same day at 19:00 CAT on SuperSport 11 and 20:00 CAT on the WWE Channel 128.

The WWE Tables, Ladders & Chairs is an annual pay-per-view event featuring matches in which the afore-mentioned objects are legally allowed as weapons within or outside the ring. The 2019 edition will be the 11th Tables, Ladders & Chairs event, which was first held in 2009.

SuperSport viewers can look forward to seeing Roman Reigns and King Corbin bring their rivalry to a head with a Tables, Ladders & Chairs match. Their current feud dates back to Survivor Series, when Reigns famously took down Corbin with a spear in an elimination match and sparked off a conflict which will end in dramatic style come Monday morning.

Another crunch clash at the WWE Tables, Ladders & Chairs in Minneapolis sees The New Day (made up of Kofi Kingston and Big E) defend their WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship against The Revival (Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder). Kingston and Big E won the title off The Revival last month, but Dawson and Wilder emerged victorious in a fatal four-way elimination match to earn a shot at reclaiming the belts.

The WWE event will also feature an historic Tables, Ladders & Chairs tag team match for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship as the Kabuki Warriors defend their belts against the team of Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair; Rusev will look for revenge against Bobby Lashley in a tables match; and the imposing Aleister Black will face Buddy Murphy in a singles match.

Finally, SuperSport viewers can also enjoy a singles match between Bray Wyatt ‘The Fiend’ and The Miz. The latter has become drawn into the rivalry between Wyatt and Daniel Bryan, with ‘The Fiend’ claiming the Universal Championship back at Survivor Series. Wyatt has even threatened The Miz’s family in the build-up to this clash, which will be a non-title match but is sure to be one for the ages.

Don’t miss the 2019 WWE Survivor Series on DStv. Visit www.dstv.com to subscribe or upgrade and join in on the excitement. And while you’re on the move, you can stream the action on DStv Now.

Richard Commey lose IBF lightweight world title to Teofimo Lopez Jr

$

Is Teofimo Lopez Jr. the real deal? That was the key question for the 2018 ESPN prospect of the year going into his shot at lightweight world titleholder Richard Commey, who was by far his most significant opponent, on Saturday night.

The answer: A resounding yes.

Lopez is for real.

He annihilated Commey in the second round to take Commey’s IBF lightweight world title in emphatic fashion in the Terence Crawford-Egidijus Kavaliauskas co-feature at Madison Square Garden.

“I’m at a loss for words right now. This is a dream come true,” Lopez said. “[Commey] is a bad man. His shot could’ve done the same to me if he hit me with that shot.”

Commey (29-3, 26 KOs) had previously suffered only two highly competitive decision losses — to Robert Easter Jr. in a world title bout and to contender Denis Shafikov. He had never been overwhelmed before, until facing Lopez.

Commey, 32, a Ghana native fighting out of New York who was making his second defense, looked good in the opening round, touching Lopez with a couple of right hands. But then Lopez destroyed him in the second.

Lopez wobbled Commey with a left hook, then floored him seconds later with a right hand on the chin. Commey was unsteady when the fight continued, and Lopez stormed after him. Lopez landed numerous right-left combinations and had Commey in all sorts of trouble and backed into the ropes.

As Lopez (15-0, 12 KOs), 22, of Brooklyn, New York, who represented his parents’ native Honduras in the 2016 Olympics, continued to blast away, Commey was helpless. Referee David Fields finally stepped in and waved off the fight at 1 minute, 13 seconds of the second round.

Lopez, as he always does, celebrated with a backflip. Then, as he did when he fought on Heisman Trophy night in 2018, Lopez struck the Heisman pose in the ring while wearing newly crowned Heisman winner Joe Burrow‘s LSU jersey.

“The kid has dynamite in his hands,” said Lou DiBella, Commey’s promoter. “I knew that was possible. Richard got caught with dynamite. He’s a very athletic puncher. His offense is so dangerous I don’t think he’s out of it against [Vasiliy] Lomachenko. The kid’s gonna get better. He’s a dangerous little f—er.”

Pound-for-pound king and unified lightweight champion Lomachenko (14-1, 10 KOs), 31, of Ukraine, was seated ringside to scout the fight, because the plan called for him to fight the victor — Lopez — to further unify the 135-pound title in the spring.

“We want to unificate four titles,” Lomachenko, who holds two of the major 135-pound belts, said of Lopez. “Now he’s a world champion, and now he’s in position to fight me.”

Lopez and his father, trainer Teofimo Lopez Sr., have been very vocal calling Lomachenko out, and now it looks like they will get the chance.

“You all know who I want to fight next — 2020 is going to be a big year. ‘The Takeover’ has arrived, and you haven’t seen anything yet,” Lopez said.

Uganda, Ghana and Botswana have highest percentage of women business owners in the world, finds Mastercard Index

Third edition of Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurs profiles the progress and achievement of women entrepreneurs across 58 societies around the world

The third edition of the Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurs (MIWE) has listed three African countries as global leaders in terms of women-owned businesses. Uganda, Ghana and Botswana are ranked as the top three countries with the highest percentages of women-owned businesses across the 58 markets evaluated around the world.

Based on publicly available data from international organizations including the International Labour Organization, UNESCO and the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, the global Index tracks the progress and achievements of women entrepreneurs and business owners at three levels: (i) Women’s Advancement Outcomes, (ii) Knowledge Assets & Financial Access, and (iii) Supporting Entrepreneurial Factors.

The results reaffirmed that women are able to make further business inroads and have higher labour force participation rates in open and vibrant markets where the support for SMEs and ease of doing business are high. They are also able to draw from enabling resources, including access to capital, financial services and academic programs.

Although the available support in open markets is a significant indicator of success, the Index also revealed that it is not the only consideration. Despite traditionally featuring less favourable conditions, five of the eight African countries evaluated in this Index made it into the top 10 markets leading in women business ownerships. These “driven-by-necessity” entrepreneurs are determined to succeed despite a lack of financial capital and access to enabling services.

Beatrice Cornacchia, Mastercard’s Head of Marketing and Communications for the Middle East and Africa, said: “Women entrepreneurs continue to have a direct impact on economic growth and the wellbeing of society. In sub-Saharan Africa in particular, women continue to demonstrate an unwavering commitment to supporting their communities through entrepreneurship. But to unlock the full potential of the African continent, we must continue to foster an entrepreneurship ecosystem for women that helps them to overcome barriers – whether cultural, legal, social or traditional.”

Other key African insights:
Women are achieving gender parity with men in terms of entrepreneurial activity in several markets including Ghana, Nigeria and Uganda. Meanwhile, improvements in Angola and Malawi, also helped narrow gender disparity.

  • Nigeria had the second highest proportion of women in professional/technician roles among the 58 markets surveyed, and an exceptionally high percentage of females as entrepreneurs. Specifically, nearly four in every 10 working age women are engaged in early-stage entrepreneurial activity (40.7% compared to 39% for men).
  • South Africa was one of the top scoring nations when it came to women having equal access to tertiary education, and it also scores higher than its African counterparts with regards to financial inclusion (86%) compared with men.
  • The findings also highlighted women’s abilities to thrive as business owners and pursue opportunities. According to the World Bank, 45% of economies around the globe have laws constraining women’s decision to join and remain in the labour force.

In addition to shining a light on the progress of women entrepreneurs on a global and regional scale, Mastercard is committed to designing a better world for women that creates limitless possibilities for us all. In Africa and South East Asia, Mastercard is fuelling women-led businesses with access to micro-credit and new digital marketplaces through platforms like Jaza Duka and the Mastercard Farmer Network. In South Africa, Mastercard has collaborated with Junior Achievement South Africa to run a 20-week entrepreneurial development programme, empowering women between the ages of 18 and 35 to start and run their own businesses. Furthermore, the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth is providing philanthropic support to enable financial literacy training and access to vital tools and services for women entrepreneurs in underserved markets.

Another feature of the night was the launch of the 21 Gun Salute, a compilation of songs produced veteran producer Tony Owen which features songs by Black Prophet, Macka B, Mighty Diamonds, Anthony B and others. The compilation is available on all digital stores worldwide.

Also in attendance was Sir Lloyd Coxsone of the Outer National Sound System whose selection of vintage tunes set the tone for a wonderful night.

The Gregory Isaacs Foundation in Ghana is expected to be involved in a number of activities ranging from providing music education to the youth and promoting the music and works of Gregory Isaacs with a show in honor of Gregory planned for July 2010 in Ghana.

According to the Country Director for Ghana, Ahuma Bosco Ocansey aka Daddy Bosco, “The Foundation will work in Ghana to immortalize the name of Gregory Isaacs through working with youth in music and undertaking other charity works.”

VIDEO: Ghana Ambassador to United States of America show off dancing skills

Yes, we know that a Diplomat’s career entails a lot. It is a serious job with numerous functions.

The main functions of Diplomats are: “representation and protection of the interests and nationals of the sending State; initiation and facilitation of strategic agreements; treaties and conventions; promotion of information; trade and commerce; technology; and friendly relations,” according to Wikipedia.

Having previously served as Ambassador of Ghana to Japan with concurrent accreditation as High Commissioner to Australia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and Singapore from 2001 to 2008, the 19th Ghana Ambassador to the United States of America, His Excellency Dr. Barfour Adjei-Barwuah is aware that, aside signing all the agreements on behalf of his country, there is also a time for not so serious activities … like dancing.

You may disagree with the above assertion but if you are aware of the duties of an Ambassador, one thing is certain – dancing is definitely off the table. But Ambassador Adjei-Barwuah can actually dance and he does so effortlessly.

As the Special Guest of Honor at the Annual Dinner Dance and Fundraising organized by the Ghana Association of Pittsburgh, the Ambassador opened the dancing floor and oh, he actually stole the night. For his age, his dancing moves were topnotch. His moves were so apt and his intermittent spinning and turning can certainly reduce traffic on the National Highway 1 (N1-Highway) in Accra, Ghana.

As a point, the Ambassador thought some of his moves were ridiculous and I concur too. Watch the video below captured by Ghana Gist TV at the event and let me know if you agree too. Well, all work and no play makes …

Together with all stakeholders in the Agriculture sector and the food chain in Ghana, Plantation Crew in partnership with the National Folklore Board and powered by Marketicons is hosting the first-ever Plantain Festival under the theme “Plantain for The Nation” in Africa.

The event according to the organizer will provide an avenue for the general public to discover and taste an array of dishes made with plantain as the core ingredients. The cause also provides a solid consumer base for the average plantain farmer annually as well as promotes plantain farming.

Whether ripe or unripe, Plantain is one of the few foods that can be used at every stage of its life. The leaves can be used for medicinal purposes and the fruits edible at all stages. There’s a lot of recipes with the base of plantain which are unknown to us Ghanaians and as such Plantain festival will promote an awareness/enlightenment campaign to unveil all other recipes or foods made from plantain.

The event will provide vendors with the opportunity to be creative, innovative and entice the general public and Plantain enthusiasts.

This exciting event has received several endorsements by many celebrities including KOD, Efya Odo, George Kwaning and International Chef Danie Inc who is seen in an endorsement video emphasizing the relevance of such an event to learn more uses of our Ghanaian farm produce especially Plantain. Chef Danie has made meals for celebrities including Opera, P.Diddy, Pharrel & American rap star 50 cent.

Among the several-invited guest will be Miss Agriculture & her Team participating on the event day to share some more relevance & fun facts on Agriculture in Ghana.

Children’s Aid helped a young Ghanaian woman get to College in America

When Karen Mills first met her father, she was 13 and getting off a plane in New York, her first time in America. He came to pick her up at the airport, but she realized right away that he couldn’t see her. He suffered from severe glaucoma. In all the years of their long-distance phone calls, he’d never told her that he was blind.

When she was growing up, Ms. Mills lived with her mother and three siblings in Accra, Ghana. Her mother sold candies to make a living, but it was barely enough to get by. Her mother often bought just enough food for the children, then swore she wasn’t hungry. Ms. Mills was frequently sent home from school because her family couldn’t pay the tuition.

Her father, who had left the family and moved overseas, called one day to say that she and her three siblings should join him in America, where they could get a free education. As Ms. Mills prepared for the trip, she dreamed of the long hours she would spend with the father she’d never really known. They could cook meals and play sports together, she thought, like the families she saw on TV.

When she and her siblings arrived at their new home in New York, she quickly realized that she would be less like a child and more like a caretaker. She skipped class to take her father to doctor appointments and came home every afternoon to make him dinner even when friends invited her out to play. The airtight bond she’d envisioned didn’t materialize — he was often tired in the evenings and frustrated that he couldn’t do more to contribute to the household.

“I felt like he was a stranger because I’d never met him before,” Ms. Mills said. “I would answer him if he asked me a question, but I didn’t try to make conversation because I didn’t know what to talk about.” She longed for her mother — ever-smiling, big-boned with comforting hugs — but tried not to reveal her homesickness when they spoke by phone.

Ms. Mills focused on her homework and earned top grades. But it was hard for her with little family support. When she saw classmates surrounded by their full families, she’d choke back grief and try to think of the positive.

“When I got my diploma, I felt heartbroken because I didn’t hear family cheering,” Ms. Mills said. “My friends were, but I needed my parents. I almost didn’t want to go because nobody was coming to support me or see me walk onstage.”

When she began taking piano lessons at Children’s Aid, which is one of the seven beneficiary agencies of The New York Times Neediest Cases Fund, she found the family structure that had been missing. Nearly every day she stopped by its office, where staff members would ask about her friends, grades and college applications. She enrolled in its catering program so that she could learn recipes to try out on her father.

The Children’s Aid staff recognized even the needs Ms. Mills didn’t articulate. When she was a high school senior and getting ready for college, she realized she had no money for new clothes or dorm room furniture, but she kept that to herself, thinking she could work on campus to save money. Children’s Aid gave her gift certificates so that she could buy blankets, pillows, a laundry hamper and a new winter jacket.

On her own, Ms. Mills packed a suitcase and took a Megabus to the University at Albany last year to begin her college life, taking out loans to cover tuition. She set up her dorm room with a blush pink theme and hung photos of family members on the wall. At first she returned home every two weeks to visit her father, but he encouraged her to stay on campus and settle into her new home, keeping in touch by FaceTime instead.

Ms. Mills is studying human biology and psychology and hopes to become a physical therapist. She likes helping people work toward their goals, she said, because she has endured the toughest of circumstances and knows the satisfaction of surpassing her own expectations.

*OUR COMPANIES WILL VISIT GHANA NEXT YEAR – MAYOR OF PITTSBURGH TO AMB. ADJEI-BARWUAH*

The Mayor of Pittsburgh, William Mark Peduto, has pledged to send a business delegation to Ghana next year to explore economic opportunities in the country’s manufacturing, infrastructure and technology sectors.

The Mayor of the western Pennsylvania city made the statement when Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, H.E. Dr. Barfuor Adjei-Barwuah, paid a courtesy call on him on Friday, December 21, 2019.

The Ambassador was on a 3-day visit to Pittsburgh to participate in the 2019 annual town hall and fundraising gala organized by the Ghana Association of Pittsburgh.

Dr Adjei-Barwuah emphasized the government’s commitment to expanding the economy and creating jobs for the Ghanaian youth. The Ambassador posited that, “at the moment Ghana’s economy is expanding at a very fast pace, and given that Ghana is now the host of the Continental African Free Trade Area, the country is going to generate a lot of economic traffic and expecting improvements in connectivity and increase in demand for goods and services”.

“With a business friendly environment like ours, companies from Pittsburgh can be rest assured that their investments will be protected. And I believe that you have the capacity to send a delegation of companies to Ghana to explore and assess the numerous economic opportunities in our country”, Dr Adjei-Barwuah added.

Pledging his city’s support and readiness to partner with Ghana, Mayor Peduto remarked that, “over the past 10 years, companies and institutions in Pittsburgh, especially those in the educational and medical sectors, have expanded beyond our country’s borders but with limited presence in Africa”.

“This means that we have companies in other sectors that are eagerly looking to establish a presence in Africa. Together we can identify those that have alignments to the areas you are looking for so that we can send a delegation to Ghana as early as next year”, Mayor Peduto added.

The Ambassador also met with the Allegheny County Executive, Rich Fitzgerald. The two leaders discussed support for Ghanaian residents in the county.

Additionally, as part of the tour, Dr. Adjei-Barwuah met with the Ghanaian community in a town hall meeting and later at the association’s annual dinner. He also joined the church of Pentecost on Sunday for fellowship.

The Ambassador was accompanied by Kofi Tonto, Head of Information & Public Affairs, Edem Avotri, President of the Ghana Association of Pittsburgh, and other executives of the Association.

The Ghanaian Community in the Pittsburgh area have been commended by the Ambassador of the Republic of Ghana to the United States of America, His Excellency Dr. Barfour Adjei-Barwuah.

Speaking at the Annual Dinner Dance and Fundraising organized by the Ghanaian Association of Pittsburgh, Ambassador Adjei-Barwuah observed that having attended numerous Ghanaian events in America, children are often left in the house.

“… This is the second time I have been to a Ghanaian community [event], where people have consciously brought [their] children to the function and I want to congratulate you for that because most of the time, you leave the children [at] home,” this statement was met by loud applause and cheers from the patrons.

“So feel proud of yourself for being able to do that,” he ended when the applause subsided.

His Excellency also advised Ghanaians who are not members of the Association to register to be part and contribute to the growth of the Ghanaian Community in the Pittsburgh area.

He reechoed President Nana Akufo-Addo’s word that, they must not be spectators, instead they must be participants.

Best African Players from the weekend

SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv enjoyed another great weekend of football action, with the continuation of the 2019/20 Premier League and Serie A campaigns.

In the Premier League, two of the top performing Africans of the weekend both scored in the same game, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netting in the 12th minute of Arsenal’s 1-1 draw away to Crystal Palace at Sehurst Park. The Gabonese was also sent off midway through the second half, leaving the Gunners to hang on for a share of the spoils and ruling him out of their next game against Sheffield United.

The other goal scorer was of course Ghanaian Jordan Ayew, who converted from an assist by Senegalese Cheikhou Kouyate to continue his fine Premier League season in the colours of the Eagles.

Another top African in the Premier League this weekend was Manchester City’s Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez, who scored two goals and provided an assist as his team racked up a 6-1 away win over Aston Villa on Sunday evening, reclaiming second place on the log from Leicester City in the process.

Mahrez and Ayew are set to come up against one another when City host Palace at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday 18 January, a match you can see live on SuperSport.

In Serie A, the top performing African player was Ivorian Seko Fofana, who set up two goals – for Ken Sema and Rodrigo De Paul – in Udinese’s 3-0 home win over Sassuolo on Sunday. The win lifted the Udine club to 12th place on the log and they are now a full 10 points clear of the relegation zone.

Another African performance of note came from Franck Kessie, with the Ivorian putting in a solid 90-minute shift as Milan claimed a much-needed 2-0 win at Cagliari to return to the top half of the standings. The match at Sardegna Arena also featured a first goal since his return to the Rossoneri for the legendary Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

You can see Fofana and Kessie go head-to-head on SuperSport this coming weekend when Milan and Udinese meet at the San Siro on the afternoon of Sunday 19 January.
