Current Creative Arts Council/Secretariat/Committee is a joke, Please dissolve it.

The Creative Arts Ministry  was established in 2013 and a 33 member interim  Creative Council Board consisting of representatives from all the domains under the Creative Arts  Industry was inaugurated in September 2016 at Coconut Groove Hotel by the then Minister, Hon Elizabeth Ofosu Agyare.
Their mandate was to see to the passage of the Creative Arts Bill which will then legalise the Council and proceed to establish a legal secretariat.
Fortunately or Unfortunately after the 2016 presidential elections the party in power lost to the opposition party and unfortunately the new government infested our Arts with their politics.
Arts Unites and Politics Divides so the last thing we were expecting from them is exactly what they did.
The 33 member board which had travelled the length and breath of the entire country with the Creative Arts Bill and was almost done with the passage of the Bill in parliament was DISSOLVED and replaced with just a 3 member Council/Secretariat/Committee comprising of the Presidents Daughter and 2 party foot soldiers in March 2017.
The new committee’s mandate was to constitute new members for the board within 3months so they can see to the passage of the law and this to many of us did not make sense since that was already being done and therefore politicising it was just senseless especially when most of the old members were the heads of the various domains under the Creative Arts.
Doctors do not go for carpenters to come and run their associations for them so we have always advocated for our own people to manage our own affairs legally.
Unlike Ghamro that deals with individual Rights the Creative Arts Council is completely different and the only way it can be established is by bringing the heads of the various recognized associations together. You can’t  re-invent the wheel.
It’s been almost a year since the 3 Party members were put into office and not a single Job has been done. Surprisingly the primary focus for establishing that committee is gradually shifting and a typical example is the Minister Hon Catherine Afeku telling us that the Presidents daughter is now overseas engaging in Arts exhibitions after there were rumours that Madam Gyakumah had vacated her Post. Madam Minister for Christ sake that is NOT the reason why you appointed her.
The Secretary to the the 3 member committee Madam BB Bright is also at home now nursing her new baby.
Now the only one left is the Ministers appointed President Mr Okraku Mantey and gradually all hope is being lost since he alone cannot do the Job.
It’s been a wasteful 1 year and there seems to be no hope in sight since the President of the committee put in place has no clue where to start from.
The shocking part was when Mr Okraku said on Akwesi Aboagye’s Entertainment Review show on Peace 104.3fm on the 27th of Jan 2018 that he did not know Akunu Dake and has never met him before even though Akunu Dake claimed on the same program that someone from Mr Okraku’s office called him.
You see Mr Akunu Dake a convener of the Culture Forum and former Chairman of GTA  is one of the Key persons who worked hard to put together the Creative Arts Bill Draft that he Mr Okraku is suppose to be working on so if Mr Okraku who is suppose to constitute a board comprising of the key stakeholders does not even know those who Drafted the Bill then I can confidently say that he has thrown away the bill and we are in deep annals.
I believe the Arts Sector have been taken for granted for far too long and it’s time we get serious with it.
How can the current appointed President of the board be fully employed at a private media house and yet nobody is complaining of conflict of interest. Fact is the Creative Arts Sector has a lot of domains under it and therefore anyone put in charge should really be in charge to be able to get effective results and not someone who will be flirting with the position.
The Minister is also worsening our plight by putting her hopes in Mr Okraku who is like I said just flirting with the position.
All the Minister knows is about tourism and nothing about Creative Arts so she needs to make the right decisions after all there was a system in place so what was the need to Dissolve it and replace it with the mess we are witnessing currently.
The budget was read and all that was mentioned on Creative Arts was Feasibility studies.
Just a couple of days ago the Minster met the press and all she could say on Creative Arts was Agya Koo and Daddy Lumba TV as if that’s what we need.
Instead of going back to the drawing board and making the right decisions the Minister is rather complicating the issues with new born bad decisions like appointing an individual recommended by the President of the Nation to collect data for the whole film industry.
My harmless question to her is that was the contract sole sourcing or open to others for biding?
It’s sad to Note that a smaller organisation like Musiga was able to open up for various organisations to bid for the contract to research into the Music industry which eventually was won by a world recognised institution like KPMG yet a whole Government and its Minister decided to sole source an individual who has NO track record in Data collection and Research and then go ahead to endorse this confusion at the meet the press.
According to the Minister their Data collection man has finished with one region ie HO and he is suppose to go to all the 10 regions so you can imagine that by the time Mr India is done with all the regions it will be time for elections and the Minister would have deliberately wasted our time with these bad decision which will eventually yield No results.
The shocking part is that we have institutions like the National Commission on Culture and the Statistical Services whose responsibilities and mandate is to undertake such research and collect Data.
Fact is the Minster at the recent meet the press did not give us any timelines for her Creative Arts Committee she set up and we can’t also afford the luxury of having a temporal committee as permanent.
I strongly believe that the Ministry is too huge for the Minister to handle effectively or she must sit up but moving forward it will be prudent to seperate the Arts from the Tourism so that we can have a Minister solely for the Arts and Culture who can then concentrate and deal with our issues effectively.
Until that is done we will continue to move in circles with these comedy of errors.
I have deliberately left out the Deputy Minister Mr Ziblim since the little said about his role the better.
Let’s take the politics out and seperate the Arts from Tourism so that we can speed up with the Laws and policies to Grow our beloved Creative Art & Culture.
Long Live the President of Ghana
Long Live the Minister for Tourism
Long Live the Creative Arts & Culture
Long Live Ghana.

Ria Solanke and Flourish Africa partner to shed light on Kangaroo Care for Premature Babies

$

On the 18th of December 2017, Flourish Africa in partnership with top child photographer, Ria Solanke visited the new-born unit of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital for a free photo shoot session with some new mothers. This would have been an ordinary shoot except for one thing: the mothers were all kangaroo care mothers. Yes, you heard right, ‘kangaroo mother care’.

The kangaroo mother care (KMC) is a form of nurture given to pre-term babies that involves the baby being placed skin-to-skin as he nests upright against his mother’s chest while wearing only diaper, hat and socks then, both mother and child are held together with a firm cloth.  According to Prof Chinyere Ezeaka, Head of Neonatology Unit, LUTH, and National President of the Nigerian Society of Neonatal Medicine (NISONM), KMC keeps the preterm baby warm, facilitates breastfeeding on demand, improves maternal-newborn bonding, and furthermore, the mother’s heart beat and respiration helps to maintain the baby’s breathing and heartbeats.  Talk about magical!

The Kangaroo Mother Care is affiliated with the way a kangaroo carries her newborn kangaroo called “joey”, which is by nature delivered preterm, it then crawls into the mother’s pouch where it gets fused to the breast for nutrition for about four to five weeks. KMC was first started in Bogota, Colombia in 1979. The human body’s temperature is stable; as a result, the baby can get all the warmth they need from the mother. The parent’s stable body temperature doesn’t only help to regulate the neonate’s temperature, the closeness that kangaroo care offers both mom and child equally allows for readily accessible breast feeding so that the baby can readily feed and mature.. Thus, KMC ensures physiological and psychological warmth, readily available breastfeeding with improved bonding.

This form of care has been recommended worldwide by the World Health Organization (WHO), and all international and national health agencies as the standard form of care for premature babies who are defined as babies born before 37 weeks. This is in response to the large numbers of premature babies dying globally, and the challenges due to lack of incubators, manpower and stable electricity.  The Federal Ministry of Health adopted this method for all levels of care in Nigeria, to complement the use of incubators, in order to help reduce our neonatal mortality; and produced a KMC training manual in 2008. However, many hospitals within the country are still on the brink of implementation making LUTH one of the foremost tertiary hospitals leading the trail on this side of Africa with a dedicated Kangaroo Care Unit to add to the use of incubators in caring for the teeming number of premature babies referred to the hospital for specialized newborn care.  This is despite that LUTH has one of the largest newborn wards with about the highest number of incubators in West Africa. Prof Chinyere advises that this form of care be urgently cascaded in other parts of the country as it is not only effective but equally economical; as incubators are very expensive, and beyond reach of many health care providers.

At the LUTH newborn unit, the three mothers were met with their preterm babies tied to their chests in the kangaroo care position. The first mother had a baby, the second had given birth to twins while the third mother had given birth to triplets with the babies each taking turns to nestle against their mother— all pre-term and administering the skin to skin form of care.

Although fathers and grandmothers can take part in kangaroo care after appropriate hygiene, especially when the mother needs her rest, the mother should be the primary provider of skin-to-skin contact, as only she can breastfeed. Since skin-to-skin contact is basic to early bonding and attachment, it should probably not be done by hospital staff and other surrogates.

In kangaroo mother care, the baby wears a small diaper, socks and a hat which is placed in a flexed (fetal position) with maximal skin-to-skin contact on the parent’s chest. The baby is secured with a wrap that goes around the naked torso of the adult, providing the baby with proper support and positioning, constant containment without pressure points or creases, and protecting from air drafts (thermoregulation). If it is cold, the parent may wear a shirt or hospital gown with an opening to the front and a blanket over the wrap for the baby.

Lagos University Teaching Hospital seems to have pioneered a groundbreaking movement that needs to be practiced by other hospitals in a bid to reduce the high levels of mortality rates of preterm babies, as pre-term babies have less chances of survival due to immature organs and inability to maintain their body temperature; and even where survived, may suffer life long ailments. For a country ranked as the third highest rate in premature births, KMC practice nationwide in Nigeria is highly significant for our progress.

All the photos were taken in their most natural state and child photographer; Ria Solanke worked her magic to the excitement of the glowing mothers. At time of publishing, all the women had been released to their homes along with their healthy babies boasting the success of this form of care.

Music producer and rap artiste King Of Accra has launched his online beat shop called kingofaccra.com
Kingofaccra.com is beautifully designed to offer both mainstream and up and coming musicians the opportunity and flexibility of acquiring a beat without going through the stress of chasing an engineer.
KOA mentioned that often times, because of his tight schedule in the studio, a lot of musicians willing to work with him do not get the chance. So in a bid to solve the problem, he came up with this idea for people to have access to his beats at an affordable price in the comfort of their homes.
Instrumentals on kingofaccra.com can be bought through several paying methods and artistes upon successful purchase can book a recording session with King Of Accra or decide to record elsewhere.

The website is flooded with a different genre of instrumentals and navigation is really simple, making it easy for visitors to maneuver through the site.

According to the KOA, a local payment system is underway to ease transaction for the many Ghanaians who will be patronizing the kingofaccra.com.

E.L premieres the visuals to his single ‘Pay Like A Boss’, a song off his forthcoming, ”WAVs” (West African Vibes).

Shot in London and directed by Wowa, the video sees E.L disclose his financial capabilities as well as how his money ”speaks” for him when he wants it to.

E.L, similar to some songs of his, sings throughout this one. In terms of instrumentation, the beat definitely has a West African mid-tempo vibe, one which has evolved to the Afrobeat genre. Regardless, the mellow grooves on this piece are adorned with some drums to make it lively.

Watch and share.

DStv dedicates FOUR SuperSport Channels for Winter Olympics on DStv

The average annual snowfall for Sub-Saharan Africa is a paltry 0.01 inches less than half a millimeter. This is nowhere near enough to create the alpine conditions needed to participate in a winter sports event like cross-country skiing, bobsleighing, alpine skiing or skeleton. Yet, this has never been a deterrent for African countries like Kenya, Zimbabwe, Ghana, South Africa, Madagascar and Cameroon who have all at some point since 1984, sent athletes to participate at the Winter Olympics.

As Africa’s enchantment with the winter spectacle continues, DStv customers will enjoy a decidedly warmer viewing experience to this year’s Winter Olympics being hosted in PyeongChang, South Korea where Nigeria and Uganda are set to make their debuts.

The 2018 Winter Olympics gets underway on Friday, February 9 and will be broadcast live on DStv across four dedicated SuperSport channels: SS11; SS12 and the soon-to-be launched pop-up channels; SS13 and SS14.

DStv customers in Ghana will witness history in the making when Ghana’s Akwasi Frimpong rolls down the ice track head first in the skeleton. These events will air on SS11, SS12, and SS13 available to all active DStv Premium, Compact+, Compact and Family customers plus SS14 which will also be available on the DStv Access package. SuperSport 11 and 12 will air in high definition (HD) while SS13 and SS14, the designated as the 24-hour Olympics news channel, will be standard definition (SD).

SuperSport 11 will kick off its broadcast on Monday, February 5 with build-up content (archive footage from previous Winter Olympics games). The channel will also carry the opening ceremony on Friday, February 9th from 11am. The Olympics news channel, SS14, goes live on Wednesday, February 7 from 3am. The launch for SS12 and SS13 is set for Thursday, February 8 from 12am.

Big Brother Naija: No evictions but it’s ‘strike one’ for #KSQUARED

After spending seven days in the Big Brother house, the housemates got their first taste of reckoning at the first live show. Hosted by the ever suave and dapper Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Sunday’s show brought with it the usual blend of intrigue, suspense and entertainment as Kcee, the Limpopo crooner, entertained studio guests and viewers at home.

Soothed by the absence of evictions for this week, the housemates got to share their experience thus far in the house. After last week’s pairings, the housemates were once again tasked with competing to become the next Head of House. Bam Bam, Cee C, Tobi and Teddy A came out victorious, meaning that teams Cebi and Bamteddy will have to do battle for the HOH crown.

Another pair caught in the spotlight albeit for the wrong reasons was the dynamic quo of Khloe and K Brule, otherwise known as K-Square, who were handed their first strike by Big Brother following their unruly behavior. Khloe was able to single handedly tie herself to every controversy in the Big Brother house with her confrontational and approach, but it was K Brule who escalated the duo’s troubles by jumping off a balcony, an action that triggered an emotional response from fellow housemate Bitto.  Biggie handed K-Square a strike which ultimately is a step closer for them to get booted out of the Big Brother house; they were also disqualified from the HOH contest that took place shortly after.

Viewers were thrilled by Kcee, who performed his hit singles Pull Over, Limpopo and more. After sharing his usual dose of wise words with the housemates, Ebuka let the viewers in on a twist: there will be fake nominations on Monday night, and no evictions next week Sunday. The housemates are however oblivious of the development and this guarantees even more excitement for the viewers.

Kuami Eugene has done nothing wrong – Jacob Kwaku Gyan writes

Many people have criticised Kuami Eugene for releasing “confusion”, a song that is believed to be a remix of an original by Sidike Diabite. Albeit I concur that the song by the lynx entertainment singed youngster is indeed a cover of Sidike’s “Fais mois Confiance”, I believe Eugene has done nothing wrong in making this beautiful song for the gusto of his fans and Ghanaians at large.

First, there are over dozen copyright laws that may prevent an artist from putting up a remix. However, standard industry practice and conventions give room for an artist to take inspiration from another’s creativity but ought to give due credit to the original creator of the piece. The emergence of remixes is not a new practise in the music industry across the globe.

I hope you enjoyed the hit single by Sean Kingston titled “Beautiful girls”. Oh! I bet you didn’t know that it was a cover of Ben E. king’s Stand by me. Did you bash The then 17 year old Kingston for that amazing creative work? Kingston used Ben E. King’s riddim to express his high school self-pity, warning a possible girlfriend that her good looks will make him want to kill himself if they break-up. Teenage angst paid off well, though: The song went to Number One on three continents. Ben E. King’s stand by me has been remade in different genres by Legendary acts like John Lennon, Junior Murvin, Maurice White, R – Kelly, U2 and Bruce Springsteen. In recent times, former Disney star, Miley Cyrus cut lyrics from “Stand by Me” into the chorus of “My Darlin’,” she and the perpetually Auto-Tuned Future rhyming the older song’s title with a promise to make a movie in the 3D and had contributions from Pharrel, Dr. Luke and Mike Will I am. So Miley and Future did a perfect collabo as remix. Even the Greatest, Muhammad Ali took a shot at recording an amazing version of the same song.

The just ended Grammy awards also nominated many songs that were covers of other songs. In fact, the album of the year won by Bruno Mars had all the songs in it sampled from originals by other musicians. And oh! My very own favourite musician of all time Jay Z sampled “Bam” from Sister Nancy’s 1982 hit rock on the 4:44 album. The album had the highest number of nominations at the Grammys this year. The album that got most people dancing around the world, Grateful by DJ Khaled. The timeless song , “Wild Thoughts “ which features “Bad Gyal” Rihanna and “Kojo fine boy” Bryson Tiller is just another good sample of Santana’s “Maria”. I bet you never knew ?

As I mentioned earlier, there are copyright laws regarding how to go about a cover of someone’s creative work. I am not a lawyer so I would not dare into explaining those laws. I would leave that to my dearest , Annica Nsiah-Appau, wife and manager of Okyeame Kwame.

To the fans and lovers of kuami Eugene, keep supporting the young talent. He has caused some “confusion” with his new song but give him a break, he’s done nothing wrong.

Miss Ghana Foundation, the Charity Arm of the Miss Ghana brand has donated $5000.00 to the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine (FOCOS). Scoliosis is a medical condition in which a person’s spine has a sideways curve.

The curve is usually “S”- or “C”-shaped. In some, the degree of curve is stable, while in others it increases over time. Mild scoliosis does not typically cause problems, while severe cases can interfere with breathing. In most cases causes unknown except for main conditions of cereal palsy and muscular dystrophy.

The donation is a first instalment to commence surgical procedure for a teenager suffering from scoliosis and an extreme orthopaedic ailment; out of a total cost of $15,000.00.

The beneficiary, 13 year old Gifty Amuzu is living with a life threatening condition called TB Kyphosis of the Thoracic spine which will require urgent surgery to save her life or it will paralyse her soon. Her condition was noticed five years ago while in primary school. All efforts by her mother to curb this deformity proved futile. Currently, Gifty has dropped out of school due to the intense pain in the back which causes her to loose concentration in class. She is unable to sit, stand or walk for long periods and also cannot perform simple house chores. She feels stigmatised, sad and often isolates herself in social gatherings. Gifty Amuzu enjoys singing and aspires to become a soldier in future.

She caught the eye of the Miss Ghana Foundation recently when the Foundation’s current Ambassadors Miss Ghana 2017 Margaret Dery, her runner ups Pricilla Gameli and Marigold Frimpong visited the FOCOS Hospital as part of the Miss Ghana Foundation’s charity plans for the year.

Presenting the donation, Chairwoman of the Miss Ghana Foundation Ms. Inna Patty reiterated that, Miss Ghana Foundation was passionate about health, especially that of less privileged children. She commended the efforts of the queens and a good Samaritan for the donation thus far. She appealed for more support to complete the surgery by the end of this month of Love, February 2018.

On their part Miss Ghana 2017 Margaret Dery and her runner ups recounted how they raised funds through the Miss Ghana Kids Bazaar event, some corporate institutions such as Nasco Ghana, Brommon, Crystal Capital and Investment limited and other fund raising drives at Accra Mall, ANC Mall and Tang Palace Hotel.

Receiving the donation on behalf of 13 year old Gifty Amuzu, the nursing director of FOCOS Hospital Miss Jemima Owusu, expressed gratitude to Miss Ghana Foundation.

“We are happy to see the Miss Ghana Foundation helping to put a smile on the face of Gifty; thereby helping her fulfil her dreams of going back to school and becoming a soldier one day. Even though her case is a serious one she has been on the waiting list for weeks now, hoping for some assistance somehow. I appeal to everyone, corporate bodies and individuals to join in this good deed so that the full cost of the surgery would be covered” She said.

The Medical Doctor on Duty Dr. Gerhard Ofori Amankwa, Director of Medical Services, used the opportunity to reiterate that such conditions are not hereditary nor a curse. As such, society should show more love by supporting such patients.
