Terry Boamah, known in showbiz as Dada Hafco is on the build up to his first Studio Album titled ‘NEW ERA’ for the year 2014…

Dada Hafco released his second major single on the upcoming New Era Album titled
#VROOM VROOM

The single #VROOM VROOM which is set to become a household song is a danceable Hiplife tune which can best be described as a matured party song.

The main theme of the song is INFIDELITY. The song advices listeners especially ladies to stop going round having indiscriminate sex for fame and money but rather live a healthy God fearing life that has positive impact on the populace and the world as a whole.

Dada Hafco said in an interview that,  “It’s time we bring back good quality lyrics into our songs because music is suppose to Entertain, Inform, Educate and Encourage listeners”

#VROOM VROOM is a danceable song that would fit the Azonto and Alqaeda dance but Dada Hafco promises to release the Official #Vroom Vroom dance in his upcoming video for #Vroom Vroom. After Dada Hafco’s verse, the song breaks into a chorus and then calls in a beautiful bridge from Praye Choirmaster, followed by a short punchy verse from Praye Big Jay. Praye Choirmaster and Praye Big Jay were at their best on this song and listeners are bound to stay on the dance floor and keep the song on repeat.

#VROOM VROOM was released on radio and online through social media on November 21.

FEATURE on Paul Apowida: From Ghanaian ‘spirit boy’ to UK soldier

Paul Apowida

Paul Apowida

Paul Apowida is a soldier and accomplished painter whose first book has just been published.

But his life – which has been so rich and varied – was nearly snuffed out soon after it began.

Attempts were made to kill him as a baby because he was labelled a “spirit child” – a youngster possessed by an evil force.

The conclusion was drawn because Apowida’s parents and six other relatives died suddenly soon after his birth in Sirigu, a rural town in northern Ghana, near the border with Burkina Faso.

So-called spirit children are typically born with physical disabilities or identified as being the cause of misfortune, as in Apowida’s case.

The attempts on his life, his formative years growing up in an orphanage and his return as an adult to Sirigu form the basis of his book, Spirit Boy.

“All they think is that when a child is born and has deformities, or things start happening, is that the child is evil,” he told the BBC.

“I wrote this book to show there’s no such thing as a spirit boy. I wouldn’t have done so many good things if I was evil.”

It is nearly 30 years since attempts were made to poison Apowida.

He was fortunate enough to be saved by a local nun who moved him to an orphanage hundreds of miles away, in southern Ghana.

After a stint at an art college in the capital, Accra, he joined the British army and has served in Afghanistan.

‘Deformities reversed’

He is one of the few “spirit children” able to progress to adult life.

But the practice of killing youngsters continued in Sirigu long after he was moved from the town.

To locals, the town has become synonymous with infanticide.

However, the killing of spirit children is an established practice across the Kasena-Nankana district of Ghana’s Upper East region.

Six months ago, local leaders in northern Ghana announced the abolition of the ritual killings across seven towns in the region.

They said anyone caught trying to harm children would be handed over to the police.

The “concoction men” who used to give poisonous drinks to children have been given new roles.

Working in partnership with UK campaign group Afrikids, they agreed to work with disabled children to promote their rights.

It is the culmination of a relationship built between the charity and the local community over the last decade.

But, half a year on from the announcement of the ban, what has changed?

Afrikids says there have been no recorded instances of infanticide for the last three years.

Raymond Ayine, from the group, said awareness campaigns led by the group, as well as improved access to education, now mean more people understand that physical disabilities have a medical explanation.

“There are a number of children for whom we funded medical operations. Some of their deformities were reversed after surgery.

“They are living and the community now says if they were spirit children, they would have died. The longer they live, the more they are accepted.”

Similarly, local chief Naba Adumbire Akwara said the “traditional methods of killing and dumping spirit children are a thing of the past” in Sirigu.

Ghana’s constitution prohibits all forms of harmful cultural practices. But, in reality, little has been done by police over the years to end the practice.

The only recorded arrest of concoction men took place after an investigative journalist claimed a baby was killed in Sirigu early this year.

The apparent shift has been welcomed by Ghana’s Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur.

‘Fetish priests’

“We are happy to hear that the practice of killing spirit children no longer exists in these districts,” she said in September.

“What is even more significant is the involvement of the practitioners of the tradition known as concoction men in the solution process,” she added.

However, there is no way to prove that the practice is not continuing secretly.

Attitudes are hard to change, as Angela Aposelse found out when she gave birth to a child who had no legs.

“My husband insisted the child is a spirit child and wanted to kill her, so the midwife contacted Afrikids who initially took custody of the child,” she said.

“When I got my child, every night my husband and his people tried to kill her, but I stayed awake.

“It’s been three years now. My husband still doesn’t love the child. My neighbours also mock me that my child is not able to walk and has no future. But she is my child and God gave her to me,” Ms Aposelse said.

Despite such stories, anecdotal evidence suggests attitudes are shifting.

In Sirigu, children were killed by herbalists – called concoction men – and the dead body would be taken to the top of a hill in a wooded area known locally as the Evil Forest.

The bodies were dumped in shallow graves, covered by stones. Pregnant women were not permitted to visit the forest, amid fears that an evil spirit would possess their unborn child.

But the BBC’s Sammy Darko, reporting from Sirigu, says women have begun to visit the area to pick fruit and gather firewood.

However, our correspondent says the situation in Sirigu is not reflected in other towns in the Kasena-Nankana district.

In the town of Bongo, about an hour’s drive from Sirigu, the paramount chief of the area – Bonaba Lemyaarum Baba Salifu Atamale – told our correspondent that the killings had not stopped.

“In my community they don’t have a place where they take them to, but they kill them, the fetish priests are the ones who kill them, the families approach them and they come secretly and get rid of them, so if you are not in the know it’s difficult to apprehend them.”

Back in London, Apowida is planning his next journey to the town he still calls home.

During his most recent visit to Sirigu in 2011, he spoke to concoction men who were responsible for the deaths of countless children over the years.

“What they told me was that it wasn’t their fault. It was the family members who brought the babies for them to kill.”

He said the move to involve concoction men and give them alternative forms of income has been instrumental in helping to curb the practice in Sirigu.

And, when asked how prevalent he thinks the practice remains in the part of northern Ghana he hails from, he is adamant that the plight of youngsters earmarked as evil must not be forgotten or ignored.

“It’s still going on. There’s still more work to be done,” he said.

John Dumelo is the target of series of dubious activities being carried out by fraudsters, who are using his name to dupe poor victims.

In what has been a back to back tampering of his image to collect monies from their victims, the people behind the criminal activities have moved from duplicating his passport to cloning his Facebook account.

The actor/businessman has come out to distance himself from all of the demands being made by the fraudsters.

“Please be advised there are importers[Imposters] online posing to be me and asking for money through western union to support my foundation and also telling ladies they love them and will marry them. I’m not in Nigeria and I don’t have a Nigerian number! This is really getting out of hand. Don’t send any money,” he posted on his official Facebook page.

“I don’t have a Facebook page of my foundation neither do I have a Facebook page of my clothing line. Even though I have Skype I don’t Skype at all. Whenever I post a picture on my page these scammers copy the picture and paste the exact thing.

“They usually ask for money and tell u to send it to Nigeria using someone else’s name. They will say it’s my manager or personal assistants name. I don’t have a manger in Nigeria and I don’t have a personal assistant in Nigeria.”

“The scammers are not only in Nigeria. They operate from Ghana and other African countries. They will usually say send money for the John Dumelo charity or a relative is sick and needs money for hospital. Don’t send any money.”

Dumelo isn’t the only Ghanaian public figure whose social media account or image has been used for dubious purposes. Colleague actor Van Vicker has had his Facebook account completely taken over by hackers, and is now being used to promote pages, websites and discounted merchandised deals.

Actress Yvonne Nelson also had her Twitter account hacked weeks ago, where the hackers took over for few minutes and posted very damaging updates, which she later had to deny as not coming from her.

BIG_finalists-2With just a few days left until the much anticipated final of Bavaria Big in Ghana, the competitive tension is at its peak! The four finalists, Naa Bee, 7Thirty, Bullet and Tom Tom are all within touching distance of being revealed as the winner and each now have their eyes set firmly on the goal. Who will triumph on the night?

At thirteen and fourteen years of age respectively, Naa Bee and 7Thirty are the youngest contestants in this year’s competition. However, they both exude a cool confidence which cannot be taken for granted as they have both delivered polished performances at each stage of process. Tom Tom and Bullet almost seem like veterans in comparison, with Bullet stating in the finalists’ interview with Live 91.9 FM’s Antoine that he has been in the music game for six years.

During the interview all contestants said that they are looking forward to another performance alongside Ghana’s best live band, Afro Harmony. The performances are expected to be high impact with the bar being raised even higher. The result is undoubtedly going to be an extraordinary show.

Sage words came from M3NSA of the FOKN Bois, who reminded the audience at the semi-final that ‘the votes cast today will affect the lives of the contestants forever.’ This statement will be particularly true for the ultimate winner of the title as last year’s winner, Bryte the Micnificent, will tell you. His life has been transformed from the local Abeka boy he was, trying to bring his music to a wider audience, to the national star that he is today capable of performing hits such as “Nadia Number” to large crowds of fans.

Organisers are urging fans to try their best to turn up on time on the night in order to cheer on their favourite act and ensure that their cheers contribute to the ‘noise-o-meter’. The ‘noise-o-meter’ is the only way to guarantee your favourite act is crowned the 2013 Bavaria Big in Ghana winner and walks away with the ultimate prize. The final will be held at Freedom and Justice Park (Obra’s Spot) on Friday 29th November at 6.30pm featuring live performances from FOKN Bois, Yaa Pono, Bryte Micnificent, Afro Harmony and Efya.

Bavaria will be giving away more amazing prizes such as a Samsung Galaxy S3 Pocket, a Panasonic Flatscreen TV, a Samsung Galaxy tablet, Samsung Headphones and a wristwatch for those who buy Bavaria and redeem their scratch cards.

Bavaria Big in Ghana is supported by Kasapreko, the sole distributor of Bavaria.

For now, they can pride themselves as Ghana’s longest surviving hiplife trio still making waves after 10 years of  existence.

Ever since hiplife group 4×4 hit the scene a decade ago, they seem to be multiplying in strength and number, evident in the addition of Fresh Prince to the original  duo of Captain Planet and Coded.

Some of the hits from the 4X4 camp include  Sikilitele, Contestant Number 1, Hot Girls.com, World Trade Centre and  Waist and Power.

The frequency with which groups are breaking up has, however, sent many wondering if  4X4 would also eventually split.

Speaking to Showbiz last Monday, Captain Planet a member of 4X4 allayed the fears of their fans and said though it was difficult to maintain a group, 4X4 always rode on the respect and love the members had for each other.

“We come from different backgrounds so we have our different approaches to issues but we have always had our own way of resolving issues.  We sometimes have our differences  but even in the midst of the disagreements, we always find amicable ways to settle issues.

“The name and brand 4X4 is bigger than any member of the group. Nobody feels more talented or too big to kill this reputable brand by leaving the group. 4X4 doesn’t die.  We multiply and that is why we added a new member  which is  evidence of our strength,” he added.

Captain Planet was hesitant to comment on the break-up of groups in the business. He said he respected the decisions of such groups to fold up.

“None of us  intend going solo because we salute the 4X4 brand and hold it in high esteem. It is not about  individual talents and qualities.”

Touching on the addition of Fresh Prince to the group in 2008, Captain Planet stated that his inclusion made 4X4 a “complete whole” because he is a good singer, the one thing that was missing in the group from the beginning.”

Making themselves relevant after 10 years in the industry is a real feat. Captain Planet told Showbiz that their only weapon for success is hard work and unity.

He said after a decade, the group had grown from “boys to men” and are now more matured to transcend the borders of Ghana and conquer Africa and  the world after enjoying the status of being local champions.

The interview couldn’t have ended with Captain Planet not paying tribute to Ronnie Coaches of Buk Bak fame who passed away recently.

Being a protégé of the Buk Bak group, Captain Planet became  emotional and recollected the good relationship 4X4 had with Buk Bak.

“4X4 is forever indebted to Buk Bak because they made us who and what we are today. They mentored and gave us the right footing in the industry”.

For now, 4X4 is promoting its new album, 4ward and are optimistic it would be a hit.

4X4 comprises Sylvanus Jeff Dodji (Captain Planet), Russel Edem Avornyo (Coded) and Prince Tamakloe (Fresh Prince). The trio has won several awards including Best Group and Album of the Year at the 2011 and 2012 Ghana Music Awards.
