The Victoria Park in Cape Coast was the venue for the 2015 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards Nominees Jam that took place on March 21, 2015.

Cape Coasters were anxious to see what performances they would be thrilled to by the nominees of the 2015 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

The hype was heavy on the ready and in the hearts of Cape Coasters; they wondered if the town will be light with at the electrifying performances they have been promised. The Jam is noted for rocking all the cities it had toured over the years Takoradi, Kumasi, Tamale, Accra and now Cape Coast have tasted the fun and excitement that the Jam promises each year.

The stars descended on the Coastal City, they were met with an eager and wild crowd who were poised for action. They knew every song, danced to every beat, sang along to all the choruses and partied till the wee hours of the morning.

As was expected, the stage of the biggest pre-event party in GH was not only for the nominees alone.

The Unsung Artistes and “local champions” also took to the stage. It was three way battles with the nominees on one side, unsung artistes on the other and the local champions in the middle. The local champions came with a plan, to show the visitors the stuff there were made of, it was a “home match” they had every intension of winning.

The Unsung Artistes also had their own agenda; they were on stage to fight for a performance of their lifetime which is a chance to perform on the stage of the most anticipated event on GH entertainment calendar. For them, that performance is their claim to fame and they had to outperform each other and hope that the crowd would vote massively for them.

One after the other, Koo Ntakra, Nero X, Mz Yankeey, Luther, Kingzkid and Dark Suburb took turns to thrill audiences; it is unclear who would be the chance to perform on music’s biggest night. Fingers are crossed with anticipation for the announcement of the winner.

Then came the turn of the nominees, this year all genres were represented. Reggae and Dancehall were represented by the two women who are making waves in that genre. There is a perceived rivalry between the MzVee and Kaakie, real or not, one thing became certain in Cape Coast these two girls are in a class of their own and both deserve the title of dancehall queen.

Gospel had a worthy representation on the night in Selina Boateng and Joe Mettle. These two did not only bring the churchy feeling but as expected their interactions with the crowd is what made their performance memorable.

Selina showed her vocal ability and Joe effortlessly performed various renditions of gospel tunes that got the crowd bringing out their handkerchiefs to dance. Representing hip hop genre was Edem, EL, Pappy Kojo and Joey B.

EL made a fan out of many as he brought with him to Cape Coast all his swag and confidence. EL’s performance reached a peak when he made it possible for fans to tell him which of his hit songs he should perform. Pappy Kojo and Joey B raised the excitement of the fans as they received a rousing welcome when they appeared on stage. Those two gave a new meaning to energetic performances; they kept the crowd entertained all through their performance.

Afriyie was the only highlife representative and he did not let the genre down. He sent the crowd gay when he took them back to singing hit songs from his time was a member of the now defunct Wutah.

Cape Coasters proved they meant business when they defied the rains during D-Black’s performance. He brought them hits after hits and when he performed his collaboration with Castro, the whole arena went crazy.

It was a worthy climax to an unforgettable event of nothing but great music. After all the electrifying performances, one thing can be said about this year’s nominees jam, it pulled the most energetic crowd ever, Cape Coast gave meaning to the theme, “Ignited by Passion”.

The Vodafone Ghana Music Awards is sponsored by Vodafone Ghana, produced by Charterhouse, supported By Star, powered by GHOne Entertainment Television and brought to you by 25 million people ignited by passion.Afriyie_opt EL_opt Joe Mettle_opt Kaakie_opt Selina Boateng_opt

Boxing: Ghana’s Fredrick Lawson Wins Split Decision Over Breidis Prescott

$
0
0

Oh, for want of a nail. A controversial knockdown in the third round that probably should have been ruled a slip due to a punch behind the head meant the difference between a majority draw and a split decision. The beneficiary, Fredrick Lawson (24-0, 20 KOs) gets the first significant win of his pro career, sending Breidis Prescott (27-7, 20 KOs) on a one-way ticket to Palookaville, relegated to the gatekeepers with the loss.

In the co-feature, Rances Barthelemy (22-0, 13 KOs) was a 50-to-1 favorite against sacrificial lamb Angino Perez (18-7, 16 KOs), and the fight went exactly as any reasonable person would expect, ending at 15 seconds of the second round. It looked like a squash on paper, and it turned into a bright orange vegetable on television. Not much can be said beyond that—a horribly overmatched fighter got knocked out, end of story.

The main event was a classic Breidis Prescott sort of fight. He brought the pain early, winning the first round easily and possibly the second as well, and even when he got handled by some surprising boxing ability from Fredrick Lawson, he still looked the aggressor. The only problem came in the third round, when Prescott, who slipped and got hit behind the head, was nonetheless ruled as having been knocked down. The knockdown led to a 10-8 round for Lawson in a round that it is debatable whether he would have won.

From the fourth through the seventh, Prescott came forward, tested the strength of character of Lawson, and looked to be the better of the two men, even turning Teddy Atlas, who had insisted that Prescott should fight on the outside, into a believer in Prescott’s fight plan rather than Teddy’s. Lawson was on the back foot, dropping rounds, losing his advantage on the scorecard, and looking in a ton of trouble.Fredrick Lawson and Breidis Prescott_opt

The eighth round showed something that has bedeviled Breidis Prescott for his entire career—Prescott looked to have punched himself out. Fredrick Lawson got back in the fight, using Prescott’s depleted stamina as an opportunity first to recover his own strength and then finally to take the fight to the enemy.

Finally, the fight went to the judges’ scorecards. The split decision, 95-94 (twice), 93-96, went to the man from Ghana, and Fredrick Lawson was still undefeated. Had referee Samuel Burgos ruled the third-round slip correctly, this was at best a majority draw and at worst (for Lawson) a scenario in which he loses the third round and the fight on one of those two judges’ cards. For the record, Teddy Atlas had it 96-93 for Lawson, while your columnist scored the bout 95-94 for Prescott. This was, in every sense, a split decision, not just the official one.

There was plenty of incompetence to go around here, however. Besides the obvious incompetence of Burgos that proved decisive in the fight, the incompetence of Breidis Prescott’s cutman deserves special mention. How on earth do you get to be a cutman for a guy of Prescott’s caliber when you don’t have the slightest idea how to use an Enswell properly? The thing about boxing is that there’s no licensing process for seconds—you can bring two of your friends into a ring with you, call them your trainer and your cut man, and even though neither man may have ever even stepped into a ring before, they are allowable by the commission. I’m not saying you need an MD working the cuts, but there is a minimum standard implicit in professional work, and Prescott’s guy did not meet that standard, which may have negatively affected Prescott’s performance as the swelling got to both of his eyes.

At any rate, Fredrick Lawson is still undefeated, and it was a wonderful, entertaining fight. Sure, there’s a woulda-coulda-shoulda factor in play, but the fight is what it is, and it’s hard to argue the result since Lawson had a very good case and the knockdown looked at least plausible in the heat of the moment—it’s not Fredrick Lawson’s responsibility to make the right call.

There was a planned swing fight to open the night—Ahmed Elbiali (11-1, 9 KOs) scored an easy decision victory over Mike Stafford (13-3, 3 KOs) by a 60-53 (twice), 59-54 count—The Boxing Tribune had it 60-53 and Teddy Atlas saw it 59-56, missing a point deduction for excessive holding on Stafford and scoring the first round even.

The interesting thing about this win for Elbiali was its Pyrrhic nature. Elbiali is an atrocious defensive fighter—he walked right into a big, looping right hand that any halfway competent boxer should’ve been able to slip or counter…then did it again a good five or six times. The question at that point is not “is the punch doing damage” but rather “does the fighter have the temperament to use the heat of an actual fight to do work that can’t be replicated in the gym?” Failing to adapt to an amateurish windmill punch to the point where he’s getting smacked by it suggests that Elbiali is not a very coachable fighter. When he gets hit by someone who can actually get a punch to the target with bad intentions, Elbiali is going to find himself a knockout victim. The only question after that becomes whether getting knocked out will be enough to put some sense into him.

Sometimes a win is as bad as a loss, and Ahmed Elbiali got exposed on national television even as he won an easy unanimous decision. It’ll be interesting to see that actual fight where the would-be opponent catches Elbiali coming in with a clean shot.

Next week, Friday Night Fights is back on actual Friday, on April 3rd at 9 PM Eastern, featuring Petr Petrov (35-4-2, 17 KOs), winner of the 2014 Boxcino lightweight tournament, taking on Gamaliel Diaz (38-11-3, 17 KOs), who is a former world champion. The Boxing Tribune will have full coverage during fight week. Stay tuned—we’re the worldwide leader in covering the Worldwide Leader.

‘Obviously there’s a lot of people involved, so there are some things I can’t talk about, but in general, with every beautiful things in life, there are circles, things start and things end. Mo’hits was one of the most beautiful experiences I’ve ever had, it’s one of the things that took my career to the next level, and I appreciate every single moment I had in there, things happened, we grew older, and we grew apart, and glory be to God, every single person that was on Mo’hits records is doing well today, and that’s life in general.’

I Feel So Happy When I See Raquel, Efya, Irene And Samini Doing Well – Veteran Asabea Cropper

“I love you soo. You are all I have… that’s why I love you so much” … These are lines from one of the famous songs by veteran singer Asabea Cropper.

Known for her unique Kente culture, her traditional “Tekuwaa” (headgear) her horns, beads, kente outfit and that silky voice with the Ada lyrics, she dazzled Ghanaians, together with her brother Kenteman, to woo the hearts of many Ghanaians in the ‘90s.

Veteran singer Asabea Cropper has disclosed that she is set to stage her comeback into the music industry this year with a new song which she hopes will be a hit. The song has a line like “If you want to dance with me, no wretchedness and you gotta dress decently”.

Explaining reasons for her absence from the music scene, she noted “I took a break from the industry to attend to family and some other personal stuff”.

Asabea added in an interview with this paper that she feels excited when she hears the young crop of singers doing so well.Asabea Cropper_opt

“If you have your own children in the house who are grown up and have their cars and houses and they have money and everything, won’t you feel happy?

“When I see the Raquel’s, the Efya’s, the Irene’s and the Samini’s doing well, I feel so happy”.

When asked her favourite song from the current crop of musicians, she mentioned “Menam na me tsi tsi…. Seihor seihor” by Castro. She says, musically, she is in love with the beat “Pa da da, pa da pa da”, meaning, to wit, because, I play the horns, so I hear the saxs in there.

Asabea Cropper, who is a proud Ga Adangbe, never hesitates to showcase her culture. She explains what motivates her to dress the way she does.

“In the 1960’s we were taught in school about African Personality in the days of Kwame Nkrumah, so that is where we I got this from. Also, my grandmother, who used to put these beads on us and my mum who used to wear the Kente, bought me my first Kente. I wanted to be unique so that was why I combined all these “the “tekuwa’s, the Ahenema’s and my Kente”, she reiterated.

Celebrity Column: Peace Hyde – “The Value Of A Mother”

$
0
0

Hello and welcome to a piece of peace, your weekly dose of motivation and inspiration. Today I would like to share on a very important profession, being a mother and the title of my topic is “the value of a mother”.

Being a mother is something I feel is one of the most important callings a woman can have. It is a profession that not everyone is equipped to do. It may be bestowed on you unwillingly or you may make the conscious effort to do it, but either ways, it can be one of the most important things you will ever do simply because how well you perform, will either build or destroy someone’s future. On the other hand, there is no Paycheck for motherhood. There is no reward or appraisal to let you know how well or not you are doing. There is only the love, the care and the relentless hard work you put in. There are no prior qualifications or experience because no one can really teach another person how to become a good mother.

This is because the profession of motherhood is all about influence. You and I have an incredible opportunity to influence the next generation by what we do as a mother every day. The way we talk, act and conduct ourselves can directly or indirectly sow certain types of seeds in the lives of our children. It is important that if you feel you are not ready to become one, take all the necessary precautions to ensure you do not end up failing at a task that is already too difficult to achieve with all the best intentions in the world.

This is why intentionality is so important during the years that we raise our family. Be intentional about your own healing from life’s hurts. Be intentional about taking care of yourself. Be intentional about investing in your marriage. Be intentional about parenting. Be intentional about homemaking. Intentionality increases influence, and influence is something God asks us to be intentional about. We cannot underestimate the power of mother love, the value of home and the significance of our intentional presence in the home.

The most important thing for a child is a competent and capable mother. The most beautiful gift God has granted us is the ability to become a mother to someone. You are the most important thing for a child. A child should never feel as if they need to earn a mother’s love. This will leave a void in their heart all of their life. A mother’s love needs to be given unconditionally to establish trust and a firm foundation of emotional intimacy in a child’s life. If love is withheld, a child will look for it in a million other ways, sometimes throughout their lifetime unless they come to some sort of peace with their past. The emotional foundation we give our children at home is foundational to their life. We cannot underestimate the value of home and the power of mother love and always remember to be yourself because everyone else is taken.

Contrary to what people may think, the decision of who wins what at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs) is not taken by Charterhouse, the event organisers.

In times past, artistes who do not win anticipated awards have vented their spleen on the organisers hurling all manner of venomous invectives at them for a decision that is taken by the Academy, the Board and the general public.

Last Saturday, March 28, the VGMA Academy had its turn to decide at the Airport View Hotel.

The VGMA Academy consists of DJs, entertainment writers, presenters and critics who are carefully selected from across the country giving the Awards a national feel.

The Academy voting process is a crucial aspect of the VGMA decision making process.

After the Academy voted, KPMG the event statisticians, took charge of their individual voting sheets for verification and compilation.

The event statisticians will after the close of voting, tally the results of the general public, the Board and the Academy. They will certify, verify them and present the voting results on the night of the main event.

Voting of the award scheme is shared among the general public who have a voting weight of 40 percent, the Academy; 30 percent and the Board who have a voting weight of 30 percent.

The voting weight takes a different turn of 50 percent – 50 percent  between the Academy and the Board when it comes to the nonpublic or categories.

The 2015 VGMA Academy may have had their say, but voting is still ongoing for the general public until Tuesday, April 7, when it officially closes.

The Vodafone Ghana Music Awards is sponsored by Vodafone with support from Star, GHOne Entertainment Television and produced by Charterhouse.

Ghanaian rapper Emmanuel Botchwey musically known as Kwaw Kese would soon be a prophet according to Gospel artiste, Joyce Blessing of ‘Nyame Agyuaama’ singer.

“I know many people would be surprised about this news but the truth is that, God works in mysterious ways beyond our understanding as humans. We can never understand his ways.

“Were we not in this country when the likes of Lord Kenya and Ofori Amponsah became born again and repented of their old ways?

“Who ever thought that the Lord Kenya we all knew would become a true man of God and preach the gospel? She told Graphic Showbiz.

She continued that, “If Saul, who was an antichrist and killed God’s people could change and be a great preacher, Kwaw Kese is not beyond that.”

She has however not told the rapper about the vision but expects to do so soon.

This will not be the first time that a musician would abandon the microphone to join God’s Ministry. Lord Kenya and Amponsah were among musicians who became born again and therefore working for the Lord.

Following a Joy News documentary “Locked and Forgotten” which exposed the remand crisis in the country’s prisons, 14 remand prisoners were set free from Nsawam Prisons under the Justice for all Programme.

Controversial rapper Kwaw Kese who spent time at the Kumasi Central Prisons when he was arrested in Kumasi for smoking cannabis has commended the government of Ghana, the Judicial Services for the exercise.

In a statement on his Facebook page, he wrote, “It is certainly in the right direction since a lot of them have been waiting for years to go to trial or simply do not deserve to be there.”

He also added that,  “I will also want to encourage the above stated Institutions to do more to help decongest Ghana prisons since a lot of talent are being put to waste.”

Read Kwaw Kese’s statement below:

My People all over the prisons of Ghana and I wish to thank the Government, the Judicial Service, DFID and all Stake Holders for the release of more remand prisoners.

It is certainly in the right direction since a lot of them have been waiting in years to go to trial or simply do not deserve to be there.

I will also want to encourage the above stated Institutions to do more to help decongest the Ghana prisons since a lot of talent are being put to waste.

My team and I are coming up with various projects geared at developing the various prisons. We also thank the people of Ghana for showing concern since nobody knows when that day will come for him or her to be there. Being convicted or jailed is something one cannot easily forget.

Thank you. Kwaw Kese – KING OF THE PRISONS
